Why Western Slope Metals Uses 24-Gauge Metal Roofing

Standing-seam metal roofing during ridge-cap installation.

At Western Slope Metals in Delta, Colorado, we roll-form our own metal roofing panels and provide material supply and installation for homeowners and contractors.

For mechanically seamed roofing, we almost always use 24-gauge steel. Its greater thickness provides a more substantial panel, better resistance to impact damage and reduced tendency toward visible waviness. We also offer 26-gauge snap-lock options, so the choice depends on the panel and the project—not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

What Makes 24 Gauge Different?

A lower gauge number means thicker steel. Compared with 26-gauge steel, 24-gauge gives the panel more material to resist denting and rupture. Actual thickness varies within each gauge range, so we consider the material specification along with the gauge.

Built for Impact Resistance

Hail resistance is about more than keeping a roof looking new. Thicker steel provides better resistance to dents and rupture than comparable thinner steel. That is an important reason we favor 24G for our mechanically seamed roofing.

A dent is not the same as a hole or split. A metal panel can absorb an impact and show a dent without being punctured or torn. No roof is hail-proof, but resistance to tearing and punctures matters when selecting the roof covering.

Class 4 is the highest impact classification under UL 2218. It evaluates resistance to cracking, tearing and rupture—not a guarantee against cosmetic dents. That rating belongs to a specifically tested product, not to the gauge number alone.

Attention to the Finished Appearance

Thicker steel helps reduce oil canning—the waviness sometimes visible in a metal panel's flat areas. Panel width, striations, deck alignment, handling and fastening also influence the finished appearance.

We consider the material and panel configuration together. Thickness is a useful starting point, not a substitute for careful fabrication and installation.

Choosing the Complete Roofing System

Gauge is one part of the roof. The selected panel, supports and fastening must meet the project's wind and snow requirements.

The finish matters separately. A 24G label does not tell you which paint system or warranty you are getting. We discuss the finish and color alongside the panel choice.

Our Roofing Options

Our in-house tooling produces:

  • 1½-inch mechanically seamed roofing: almost always in 24-gauge steel.
  • 1½-inch clip-fastened snap-lock roofing: available in 26-gauge steel.

We can also arrange 1-inch nail-flange snap-lock in 26G and other profiles, subject to tooling availability and scheduling.

We do not sell 29-gauge roofing. We help you choose from the materials and profiles we actually supply.
